Conservation

What kinds of areas does the Foundation conserve?

Metsä Conservation Foundation protects both forests and valuable habitats connected to them, such as sunny slopes and small waterbodies. The Foundation's conservation sites are selected based on conservational biology and can be located anywhere in Finland.

Permanent conservation is targeted at forests whose characteristics clearly differ from usual commercial forests. Such sites are typically forests with an exceptional forestry history compared to surrounding areas. In addition to old-growth forests and forests evolving into old-growth forests, also sites whose conservation value is based on variation in nutrient levels or hydrology are sought for conservation.

The Metsä Conservation Foundation seeks the following ecosystems for conservation:

  • Old-growth forests, where no logging or other forestry management has been done in a long time
  • Forests with abundant and diverse decaying wood
  • Diverse sites with multiple different habitats
